The Network Rail “Initial Industry Plans 2011” has been released. It contains a wealth of analysis, but is rather short on concrete project details. This is to be expected, I guess, since it is really an opening gambit in what amounts to a bargaining exercise with the government for their upcoming price review.
There were some interesting bits though:
Electrification of the Midland Mainline from Bedford to Trent Junction, thence to Sheffield via Derby, and Nottingham is again being considered. This with the Cardiff Valleys services, has been on – and – off the agenda for decades. Both return. Watch this space.
Additional services are suggested between Tamworth and Birmingham New St. to relieve overcrowding on the long distance services which operate this link.
Added to station refurbishments and capacity improvements already under way at Nottingham and Birmingham New Street, these projects, should they materialise, would be a significant boost for local rail services.
